With the proliferation of those erstwhile invaders, House Sparrow , European Starling , and Rock Pigeon , there a lot of homogeneity among these species, which is a shame because what parking lot birds generally lack in beauty they more than make up for in charisma. House Sparrow, Eurasian Collared Dove and Laughing Dove are abundant and vie to distract the eye at every turn. A couple of roads cut back through the circle to the central area which boasts a fast food restaurant, a mosque and toilets. . More complex groups form when potential breeding males and/or females join.

We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. These parrots breed inside cavities in cliffs and they are very particular about the cliff. It was amazing. That plant would not die in vain.

Common Myna , a fairly recent introduction, is practically a specialist in dumpster diving at fast food joints, roosting under vehicles near shopping malls, and nesting in neon store signs. In the summer, Gray Kingbird breeds in significant numbers throughout the county with a pair defending territory in every strip mall.
