This article is about the parrots we have, not the ones we wish we had. Yes, Germany has parrots, or parakeets to be more precise. It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. A Birdy New Year! Because we never have had.

Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. There was evidence of terns breeding at some earlier stage by the remaining carcasses in the bush. There was also evidence of the damage that feral pigs can do all along the trail and along the water’s edge and we soon came across a small group of them.

They are one of the most attractive of Australia’s parrots, and one of the most common, benefiting from the planting of attractive flowering shrubs. This striking black and white bird is a common sight in the city, even in the central business district, but it is especially common in the park and breeds on the islands in the lakes here.

The elimination of vultures had its own knock on effects, such as the increase in feral dogs (now that there was more meat available for them) and corresponding increase in rabies. Is it best to spend a million dollars to save a single parrot in Tasmania or a large chunk of rainforest? This story didn’t break today, by the way.

The population decline is generally blamed on habitat destruction and introduced predators, but inter-breeding may also be to blame. One of the birds most likely to have been heard about in recent years is the Night Parrot. The huge population of feral cats undoubtedly is having a detrimental effect on our bird life.
