Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced as part of Great Outdoors Month the agency is proposing to expand fishing and hunting opportunities on 21 refuges throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Service is committed to strengthening and expanding hunting and fishing opportunities,” said Ashe. “By
They breed early and now it’s time to move out into the Atlantic. It’s only with the return of the low pressure systems in October that the Balearic Shearwaters come back and get ready to make the most of the winter and early spring productivity to breed. They are now finishing the breeding season and leave the breeding colonies.
They occur mainly in western and southern portions of North America, breeding inland in colonies on remote islands and wintering along warm southern coasts 1. In breeding plumage, adult American White Pelicans have a distinct “centerboard&# or “horn&# on the ridge of their bill.
Kerkini is shallow and is enormously productive, producing enough fish to feed a summer population of many thousands of Great Cormorants, along with hundreds of Great White and Dalmatian Pelicans, plus numerous other fish-eating birds. This indicates peak breeding condition, but by May their pouches are back to pale yellow again.

But now, they’ve decided to become full-time winter residents, resting along the shoreline, fishing in the shallows, swimming past me day in and day out. They migrate north through the Western United States, breeding in pockets all the way up through Canada.
Recently, a group of nature photographers were spotted using live fish to bait a family of Grey-headed Fish Eagles in Singapore, where the species is listed as Critically Endangered, with only about 12-18 breeding individuals left in the wild. A Grey-headed Fish Eagle photographed ethically.
Fish and Wildlife Service is down-listing the wood stork from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The wood stork occurs and breeds in Central and South America. Fish and Wildlife Service, I was involved in various aspects of the species habitat protection largely on the regulatory arena. Photo: U.S.
On our recent walks along Cable Beach checking on the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers that are currently breeding we have often observed a Little Egret. It appears to be successful at catching small fish. The water is clear and it would be easy for the Little Egret to see the fish that are present. Little Egret.
As you’ll remember, Kentucky’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources unanimously passed its sandhill crane hunting proposal. Fish and Wildlife Service for final approval or denial. One was “Superdad,” one of the few successful breeding whooping cranes in the entire eastern population. The proposal now goes to the U.S.
Living near the Sacramento River and its many lakes and tributaries makes it even more likely to see the incredible fish hawk or sea eagle we call the Osprey ( Pandion haliaetus ). Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1.
It prefers large waters and coasts during the non-breeding season, but seeks out wooded, well vegetated lakes and marshes for breeding. Non-breeding birds form together into flocks, while breeding birds sometimes seek protection by nesting in loose colonies. And did I mention that it was big?
Pallas’s Gull also breeds at Qinghai Lake, though the numbers are sadly much reduced: “The numbers breeding at L Qinghai, China, has apparently fallen from > 87,000 in 1970s to c. They are used for fishing by Chinese fishermen at other locations – nowadays mostly as a tourist attraction.
Among about 430 species of birds are Grey-necked Rockfowl (with small breeding colonies in the area), Frazer’s Eagle Owl , Vermiculated Fishing Owl , Hartlaub Duck , African Grey Parrot , Great Blue Turaco , Bare-cheeked Trogon , Black Bee-eater and hornbills.
Lindblad’s Naturalist David Stephens, who snapped this remarkable photo , sees this fashion trend on the rise: “While odd coloration may make fishing a bit more difficult, leucistic birds are regularly found breeding normally.”
While the P-a-P Wildfowl Trust’s main thrust is the breeding and release of five duck species, the habitat encourages a number of native wetland birds to inhabit and proliferate the area. They all coexist harmoniously, apart from the fish perspective that is. Before we had time to gather ourselves, he flew off.
One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. The water is misty-golden and the fishes are all glossy in the early morning sun.
The very best wetland birding around Belgrade, Serbia, is not to be found in the locally famous and tourist-promoted Obedska or Carska Bara Ramsar areas, but at Beljarica Backwaters and the fish farm triangle of Centa, Baranda and Sakule villages, in the Tamis River floodplain. mi, to the Vrbovski turnoff.
Above them, on limestone cliffs, Alpine Swift and Crag Martin breed. Wetland Halfway between bustling Belgrade and sleepy Zrenjanin, River Tamis floodzone contains abundant oxbow lakes (turned into fish farms) and salt marshes filled with birds. Forest covers 70% of the area (hornbeam, beech and oak).
In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. Of which you will be reading soon.
The Osprey is one of the true cosmopolitans of the avian world, found on six continents and breeding on five. It can and will live near most any body of water with an adequate supply of fish — fresh or brackish, wild or crowded with human activity. And Osprey love them some nest platforms.
They leave their breeding grounds in early summer to move down the coast, some travelling as far south as the Gulf of California. v=emxWyBAvTPQ The following day we also observed several Black Turnstones on the eastern side of Humboldt Bay around the Eureka public fishing pier. The Black Turnstone is strictly a West Coast phenomenon.
I love birding in the fall because of the sheer number of birds that come through after breeding season and because with molting birds and juvenile birds things can sometimes get a bit challenging. Does this fish look unhappily surprised or what? Osprey need fuel for their trip south and there are plenty of fish in Queens.
Much of this concerns the world’s changing climate and fishing pressure off our coast. There just is not the forage fish available that the species needs to thrive and grow its numbers. We encourage our participants to get a good look at the Common Murres that usually fly just above us on their way out to fish.
These narrow bills, hooked at the tip and set with numerous horny denticulations, are adapted for catching fish, a merganser’s primary source of food. Mergansers primarily feed on small or medium-sized fishes which they capture underwater by swift pursuit. Anyway, the hoodie is the only merganser endemic to North America.
They breed on a number of basaltic lakes in southwestern Argentina, and it is not entirely clear where they all winter, but some wintering Hooded Grebes have been found outside their breeding range (and a few none-breeding birds have been found year round at two locations on the Atlantic, apparently).
Life in Broome evolves around the tides and it does not matter if you are interested in shorebirds, fishing or the creatures of the reef, because you are in some way reliant on the tide chart. The Pied Oystercatcher pairs are all in their breeding territories and we can expect to find eggs laid in the first week of July along the coast here.
A few days ago, I saw a Yellow Bittern trapped in a fishing device. Flashy when breeding, camouflaged when not (or when young). Striated Heron : Small and known for dropping items on the water surface in order to attract fish. Advice to the species: avoid fish nets. Chinese Pond Heron : Quite common.
Eurasian Oystercatcher: Not all of them are breeding at Claire`s beach in Australia. “Sleep with the fishes”? At least from the perspective of the fish. As this is a coastal place, there are of course lots of waders, in larger numbers, and more variety than in Shanghai. Point for American birders, I am afraid.
By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Pygmy Cormorant – winter (it breeds in Serbia, but overwinters in Belgrade). Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser – Belgrade in winter; otherwise, the first one breeds in Serbia.
May is also a good time for herons and egrets, as they are in their full breeding plumage. Some immature Black-faced Spoonbills may have decided not to go too far north this summer, instead catching fish in Shanghai and looking like a baroque painting. Lesser Coucal breeds in Nanhui, coastal Shanghai. I guess you can see why.
Instead of hovering, some gulls have set up territories within breeding colonies of Humboldt seabirds. Gulls will harvest/steal food from breeding birds within their territories and chase away other gulls ensuring that birds within their territories are not swarmed by multiple food thieves. It is going to get rough here….
During the dry season, shallow rivers and narrow channels concentrate fish, which in turn becomes easier to catch by fish eating birds. Most birds use these ephemeral beaches as breeding grounds. They have adapted to breed during the dry season when sand bars are exposed and food is plenty. Yellow-billed Terns.
Of all migratory birds breeding in North America, Swallow-tailed Kites are among the first to leave for the wintering grounds. The local kites at this time of the year are about to start breeding. Swallow-tailed Kites are also among the first migratory bird arriving to breed in the U.S. Photo Credits: Tim Kelly.
The birds are not allowed to breed on the runway, but many loaf around on it. Around 100,000 of these terns breed on almost every available space on the island, and walking through groups of them is a deafening and quite painful experience. This species doesn’t breed on Tern Island itself, but does sometimes turn up there.
A month later I had the chance to watch these impressive birds again, fishing off Cape Trafalgar in southern Spain. Preparing for the perfect landing Brakes on, landing gear down The Gannets are present at Bempton from the end of February through to October, for their breeding season is an exceptionally long one.
That antiquity produces a high level of endemism, e.g. 19% of 62 breeding birds are endemic to the islands! He is the author of Underwater Guide to Seychelles (2015), Underwater Eden (2019) and Reef Fishes of Seychelles (2021). On the other hand, the isolation makes for those huge seabird colonies.
Only the resident shorebirds remain during these winter months, but there are also Brown Boobys diving for fish close to shore at the moment and we rarely see them during the rest of the year. I often cover 45 kilometres in a day whilst I monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding, but I do need to plan carefully around large tides.
Nickerson Beach is an amazing place to visit when the breeding birds are back. Though it is an active beach at which people fish, swim, and otherwise recreate, it also hosts an impressive array of beach-nesting birds that are readily accessible though protected. That’s a big fish! That fish is huge! Want to snuggle?
I found these beauties at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, one of the many locations the Black-necked Stilt breeds in the California Central Valley (map courtesy of Terry Sohl at South Dakota Birds ). v=dfSk54WICQ8 Either one is unique in its plumage so as to be unmistakable wandering the shoreline anywhere within their range.
Add more than 350 pairs of White Pelicans to that picture, numerous herons and up to 700 pairs of Pygmy Cormorants breeding in the same reedbeds (cover photo)… It must be bursting with activity in spring, but I was there in mid-September. Have you heard of it? Can you pinpoint it on a map?
states, 9 Canadian provinces, and 3 Canadian territories) are asked to be on the lookout for these birds as they migrate toward their northern breeding grounds. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, and others). From March 1 through mid-June, birders in the Rusty’s range (38 U.S.
Small numbers of migrant wood-warblers were around, with Magnolia Warbler , Wilson’s Warbler , and Ovenbird being the highlights, though perhaps Ovenbird breeds there. Blue Grosbeaks were common and clearly on breeding territory. There are few birds as stylish as a Green Heron. I wish we got more of them in New York.
When birders way out on the east end of Long Island reported breeding Least Bitterns at Arshamomaque Preserve in the town of Southold, my interest was momentarily piqued but I figured that I wouldn’t have time to go looking for them what with work and family obligations. And waited. And waited.
