About one hundred yards away an Anhinga surfaced with a freshly skewered fish. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time. I’d excitedly raise my binoculars to only barely make out that bright yellow eye that screamed ‘Least Grebe’ uncomfortably loud.

It migrates north to breed in the tundra where it nests on the ground close to shallow pools. It is easy to see its close association with other fish-catching, ‘toothed’ ducks. I am unable to say why some of the ducks swim with their tails raised while others allow it to trail behind them in the water.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia. Red Knot in non-breeding plumage.

The lighthouse at the point itself has been a nest-site to a pair of Eastern Ospreys for many years and they fish in the waters around the point. On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. I love American Avocets and I rarely see them in such marvelous breeding plumage, so I was in heaven. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. The zoo blamed human error for the deaths, saying it didn’t have the expertise to manage the fish and that a lack of dissolved oxygen led to the deaths.

Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season.
