The breeding ecology of the Yellow-bellied Warbler was actually studied exactly here at Nonggang in 2019 by 3 Chinese researchers. Apparently, some bird photographers think that any human artifacts shown on a bird photo immediately spoil the whole photo. This included recording a total of 77,760 minutes of video.

The main reason seems to be a better sharing of the workload in the more equal same-sex couples – something that is hardly irrelevant for humans. A juvenile, if I am correct – and a rather rare bird in Shanghai, this being rather at the southern end of the wintering breeding range. Not sure about his/her sexual orientation.

It seems the ones I got decent photos of are all juveniles – it generally seems to be easier to get photos of juveniles as they have not quite learned to avoid humans. Thank god that this does not apply to humans. Sometimes being a member of the human race feels very embarrassing.

Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime.

And now for something completely different (Monty Python). One study makes one rather weird and disturbing observation – in China, the number of captive birds has risen faster than can be explained by the breeding of captive birds (more than 1500) alone. This means there is more need for watching and thus less time for foraging.
