Splits were once a much more subjective determination, based on differences in appearance, vocalizations, habits, and breeding preferences. I have never seen a “Brown-throated ” House Wren near human settlements. This Western Grebe was from just north of San Diego. But, so far, the split has not occurred.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. Make up your mind, Ringer!

The Blue-crowned Laughingthrush (Wuyuan) is listed as Critically Endangered, as there are only about 250-280 birds spending the breeding season in Northeastern Jiangxi (and according to the HBW, it is not clear where they spend the non-breeding period).
