We can speculate that it’s part of the learning curve to adulthood or it may simply be that the non-breeding areas in Africa become inhospitable for them at this time of the year.
Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. Here’s hoping this bird makes it back to its home turf to breed and comes back to spend another winter in New York State! Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. I disapprove.
