Clapper and King rails may represent four or five species

These are brightly colored birds that breed in freshwater environments. I should also note that the abstract for the Condor paper proposes five , not four, species.

Had birders and hikers heard its ethereal song in deciduous forests of southern Illinois? Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. The equation seems incredible.

Phaetusa simplex is the only species in its genus and it seems very unlikely that it will be confused with another tern species. One has been seen in New Jersey in 1988 , in Illinois in 1949, and in Ohio in 1954 (Links are PDFs.) – interestingly, all in May.). And that is when I saw my first Large-billed Tern !
