It is not quite clear why they do this as it apparently does not affect breeding success. They have written a paper on the “Feasibility of counting breeding Pied Avocets and Black-winged Stilts using drones” It seems to work, actually – though about 20 percent of breeding pairs are being missed by drone surveys.

Playback or Birding in the Dark

Although we do enjoy it immensely, we are not doing it for fun, but to gather information on distribution, habitat choice and density of breeding pairs of owls for the first national and second pan-European atlas of breeding birds. As long as we do not harm birds, I think it is justifiable to use playback for scientific reasons.

They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. The benefits are many, including the availability of anthropogenic food sources, breeding boxes and warmer temperatures. Research done quite a while back suggests that this is adaptive.

Last Monkey Recaptured by Primate Center

These are not subject monkeys, but they are part of the breeding colony. Breeding for what? The last of nine monkeys that escaped from the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro was found at 2 p.m. All the monkeys are healthy juvenile males and not involved in health research, officials said.
