The legislature named the goldfinch the state bird in 1935 , sharing the designation with Washington and Iowa. They are a brilliant yellow during breeding season and a faded gold in the winter, but even in their duller plumage can still can pop against a snowy winter scene.

He attended Iowa State University where he earned his B.S. His summers during college were spent as a biological technician, monitoring breeding birds for Point Reyes Bird Observatory in Eastern Oregon, and also five seasons in Black Hills, SD, working for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory. Over time the hobby grew into a career.

DeMuth was originally charged in connection with a 2004 lab break-in at the University of Iowa that caused more than $400,000 in damage. His plea agreement does not mention the Iowa break-in. Instead, DeMuth will plead guilty to conspiring to damage a Minnesota company that breeds ferrets.

I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. I feel blessed to live in Colorado where I can see these beauties in migration and breeding. Perhaps, this is because we, as Americans, have destroyed nearly every morsel of prairie we have left.
