Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside. Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums. Uncomfortable weather and a lack of birds make birders grumpy. Summer is best spent drunk and indoors.

A couple of Island races exist on Kangaroo Is. It will come as no surprise to find that they live primarily on nectar, collecting it from flower blossoms with long brush-tipped tongues, but they will also take insects, especially to boost their protein intake for breeding. The nominate, was described from southeastern Australia.

The clifftop habitats along rocky shores of the North Atlantic (on both sides of the pond) abound in bird biomass during breeding bouts, for instance. There are probably other major trends that depend, for example, on latitude and timing. When Albatross alight in temporal alignment anything else is swamped out.

No, you see, the males are pretty defensive about their young, and in the breeding season will aggressively attack what they perceive as a threat to their nest. Bicycle helmets often sprout antennae during the breeding season, or poles mounted on the back of the bike. Signs are posted warning of particularly aggressive birds in parks.
