Now everyone has a chance to help the Kiwis save their birds as a Wellington philanthropist, Gareth Morgan, is trying to raise NZ$ 1 million to clear the Antipodes Islands of mice. If the money is raised he will match it to get the work underway. Spread the word and support the project if you can at Million Dollar Mouse !

Rats Taking Over from Mice in Labs

I recently fostered the sweetest little rat and I currently have two mice. While both rats and mice have similarities to humans, rats win out in key areas. Therefore, this Boston Globe article saddens me on both levels. And, of course, our old friend, Charles River Laboratories, will be a major supplier of lab rats.

African Pythons Targeted for Removal

State and Federal Agencies feared that if these two large constrictor snakes are allowed to breed they would produce a hybrid super-python. Burmese pythons either escaped from pet trade breeding facilities in South Florida after Hurricane Andrew or were released by people who no longer wanted them as pets.

For the Birds: Midway Atoll Mouse Eradication and NEPA

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. Midway, which was once a military facility, has long had mice and it once had rats, though they were eradicated in 1996. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway.
