Across the world’s northern oceans, 24 species of auklets, murres, puffins, guillemots, and related seabirds make a living catching food beneath the waves and breeding, often in large colonies, on coastlines and islands. Unlike the southern hemisphere’s penguins, however, alcids can also use those flipper wings to fly.
Controversies about federal public lands, including the 2016 occupation of Malheur NWR in Oregon and proposed bills in Congress to dispose of certain land, has focused attention on the value of federal lands to birds and birders. It was a warm winter day and the bird seemed to be practicing its song for the breeding season to come. Jewett in Birds of Oregon Descriptions in bird books always refer to the notes as “flutelike,” “clear,” and “ethereal,” but I prefer bird expert Kenn Kaufmann’s word, “pensive.”
These lands support countless birds, either year-round, as migratory stopovers, or as breeding grounds. In fact, the overwhelming majority of federal land is in just 11 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). But what else should birders know?
Crotty is a birder and lawyer living in Portland, Oregon. This is Jason’s first contribution to 10,000 Birds: Birders were rightly alarmed by the armed occupation of the Malheur NWR in Oregon. Farallon NWR , a group of islands near San Francisco, hosts the largest colonies of breeding seabirds south of Alaska.
Many may not make it to their breeding grounds due to the extreme stress of the situation, lack of resources, the weather itself, disorientation, and human-caused killers like windows and cars. But I am happy to at least have had a small taste of these beloved species as they make their way to breed for the year.
The first time I spent any quality time with them was in Klamath Basin on the border of California and Oregon. I quickly discovered they are vocal creatures, perhaps because it was summer time and the breeding season was just finishing up. So I thought it might be nice to share some encounters from previous outings.
