The California Quail ( Callipepla californica ) is the California state bird, inhabiting scrub, broken chaparral and woodland edges primarily in California, Oregon, Washington and Baja California. All New World Quail are highly gregarious, typically found in coveys or flocks except during breeding season.

There were many weekends at the Oregon coast, and as always I was on the look out for this diminutive little shorebird. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act. Not for lack of trying, mind you.

These are not subject monkeys, but they are part of the breeding colony. Breeding for what? The last of nine monkeys that escaped from the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro was found at 2 p.m. All the monkeys are healthy juvenile males and not involved in health research, officials said.

His summers during college were spent as a biological technician, monitoring breeding birds for Point Reyes Bird Observatory in Eastern Oregon, and also five seasons in Black Hills, SD, working for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory. He attended Iowa State University where he earned his B.S. in Animal Ecology.

The Kirtland’s Warbler is an endangered bird species that breeds primarily in the jack pine forests of northern Michigan. Specifically, the warbler’s primary breeding range is concentrated in a few counties in the northern Lower Peninsula and the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
