One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. Because they aren’t fishes, but – Eurasian Otters! kilometres / 0.7

Upside-down January

Photo Una.World/rs The next patch to visit was the Reva Pond, farther down the Danube, to find the Black Woodpecker , 3 WT Eagles and a Eurasian Otter walking on ice, from one hole to another, diving for a short while and continuing farther. At the end of the month my list stood at a ridiculous 45, instead of 100 or more.

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) These handsome finches breed in the far north of Europe and come here for the winter only.

Other important breeding species include Black and White Stork , Lesser Spotted , White-tailed , and Booted Eagle. Also Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans are resident species, breeding successfully on artificial platforms (close to 300 pairs). Next to them, Whiskered and Black Terns nest on floating leaves of White Water-lilies.

The Belgrade Amazon Campaign or the House of the Eagle

That is hardly a surprise: this area holds 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles, which represents the biggest density per square mile anywhere in the country! Then, there were Eurasian Otters , which I’ve seen twice. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles? And, with it, its otters, eagles and storks.

If you’ve ever seen a Mink at a distance (a live mink, not a coat) you know that they are cute frolicking fun loving land otters. Some of the lakes they breed on have been stocked with salmon and trout. And, the Mink are capable of wiping out large portions of a breeding colony in a short period.

Birding Inirida, Colombia, or river dolphins and hoatzins, part 2

We found Black-collared Swallows breeding in cracks among the lower riverside rocks. En route we saw even more dolphins, a Giant Otter (dolphins sometimes associate with Giant Otters, Pteronura brasiliensis , to hunt by gathering and attacking fish at the same time) and a group of half a dozen rare (lifer for our tour-leader!)
