On the way out I spotted a lone White-faced Ibis ( Plegadis chihi ) engaged in behavior I had not seen before. It was foraging in breast deep water.

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. By March though Scandinavian Rock Pipit begins to show some changes into breeding plumage and outs itself as a migrant rather than a resident. By the way: at the Baltic coast we had large flocks of spinoletta migrating through in late March/April, and due to them moulting from non-breeding to breeding plumage, many had seemingly pale lores.

The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Breeding colour becomes rather obvious! She also monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot.

They will feed up there and then head north to Siberia to breed. The shorebirds are starting to get their breeding plumage and the first to show some colour are the male Bar-tailed Godwit. We relocated it to a native tree, so it was better camouflaged and protected. Get yours today!
