Nisqually NWR is a major staging area for migratory birds , a wintering area for many ducks and geese, and a breeding area for numerous songbirds. According to eBird , 278 bird species have been observed and approximately 14,000 checklists have been submitted. There’s a $3 day-use fee, but it is free if you have a Duck Stamp.

Shingled buildings line main streets, and on beautiful days, the sidewalks and sandy beaches are filled with pedestrians enjoying a quieter life and fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of nearby metros like Portland and Vancouver. There just is not the forage fish available that the species needs to thrive and grow its numbers.

And I wanted to be able to fly directly from Portland, so I would not lose a day to travel. On eBird, Horicon NWR has nearly 300 species observed, more than 18,000 checklists, and 13 hotspots. It is a popular eBird hotspot with nearly 13,000 checklists and 260 recorded species. Thus, I limited my options. But now it has.
