There are some cross-references, but not always. I was happy to see the female/nonbreeding Pin-tailed Whydah male, with its short tail and little-brown-job bod —quite a contrast to the excessively long-tailed breeding plumage male, and one that astonished me when I first saw it. Storks are in Rivers and in Plains.

In addition to their homing tendency, breeding swallows are attracted to old nests. Completed nests during this breeding season cannot be touched without a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Under suitable conditions, a nest is quite durable and can be used in successive years. I wonder what that’s all about?

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here.
