I’ll spare you the pictures of the dead sea turtle and instead share something a little brighter. The area is known for being a breeding area of the enigmatic Rufous Crab-Hawk and it was the first place I saw the species, many years ago. As always, an adult Scarlet Ibis shines like a beacon.

Shearwater Chase in Costa Rica

Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle.

Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species. Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone.
