I didn’t get a shot of the Marbled Godwit near Seal Rocks in flight but I wanted you to be able to see the bird with wings outstretched so Mia came to my rescue. The Marbled Godwit breeds in the grasslands of the northern United States and southern Canada, with small isolated nesting populations in southwestern James Bay and Alaska 1.
The descriptions of the territory’s birds, seals, whales, introduced mammals, invertebrates, and plants are written within the framework of the conversationist, so it is more than a field guide, it is a record of endangered wildlife and the efforts being made to protect it. Surprisingly, South Georgia is not all ice and snow.
Some of those once-popular breeding spots now produce no chicks at all. So that’s why it’s awesome that webcams sponsored by Audubon and explore.org are providing a close-up peek into Arctic Tern nests on Seal Island along Maine’s coast. A few chicks have already hatched, and more are due any day now.
With 7,500 birds (1,500 breeding pairs), the German population is still rather small compared to the numbers the parakeets have built up in the UK or the Netherlands, where the populations range in the 10s of thousands. The zoo has a small colony of genuinely wild Grey Herons (watch them compete with the seals for the fish!),
Across the world’s northern oceans, 24 species of auklets, murres, puffins, guillemots, and related seabirds make a living catching food beneath the waves and breeding, often in large colonies, on coastlines and islands. They’re also more vulnerable to attack from large cold-blooded predators like sharks. See Cairns et al.
The only other significant mainland breeding colony is based about an hour out of Cape Town on the east coast at a place called Betty’s Bay. Thanks to fencing off of the breeding area, attacks from land predators have declined and now all four of the local cormorant species can also be found breeding at the colony.
The magnificent view from the Cliff House includes the Seal Rocks just offshore. Heermann’s Gulls form large breeding colonies on arid islands in the Gulf of California, Mexico, from March through July. Heermann’s Gulls form large breeding colonies on arid islands in the Gulf of California, Mexico, from March through July.
Okay, they weren’t as fascinating as the birds of prey eating their, or the frankly still weird drawings of nightjars carrying eggs and woodcocks carrying chicks, but still, hornbills were cool because they sealed their mates up in holes in trees and then fed them as they raised the chick. We can hope!
I’ve written before about the two near identical plovers that breed here in Arctic Bay, The Semipalmated Plover and the Common Ringed Plover. I live in one of the few places in North America where both species breed and occur regularly. And what do you do if the bird you’re watching is mostly silent?
The best birds we came up with on our circuit of each island was Great Cormorants in breeding plumage, very nice birds to see but not the rare gulls for which we were hoping. A bunch of Harbor Seals of Swinburne Island was a nice consolation though.
Penguins are flightless, but some species locomote over long distances on antarctic ice to travel between breeding grounds and the sea. And, they wear tuxedos, which seem to provide camouflage while they are swimming, where leopard seals, sharks, and other creatures would like to make a meal of them. Salas-Gismondi, R., Altamirano, A.,
Most “at-risk” breeds: poodle, Brittany spaniel, English setter, pointer, fox terrier, cocker spaniel, Boston terrier. PurinaCare pet health insurance is also offered as a direct benefit to select employees and associations nationwide and its high-deductible policies have earned the AAHA Seal of Acceptance.
There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. All taped up and ready to go!
One of the state’s nicknames is “The Pelican State,” the bird is on the state’s flag, the state seal, the state painting (yes, apparently states have official paintings), as well as on one of Louisiana’s bicentennial coins. Brown Pelicans are quite popular in Louisiana.
In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).
The highlight of the weekend was seeing a pair foraging on a beach, searching the sand and tide strands for various morsels like a turnstone, and approaching the dozing New Zealand Fur Seal without the slightest sign of fear. Red-crowned Parakeet foraging near a New Zealand Fur Seal. I’ll work on that.
It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal. The descriptions are all similar: a graceful black-capped shearwater with clean white underparts and patterned upperparts that breeds in New Zealand and which is uncommon in U.S. western waters in the fall.
Here one is close to the scenically impressive Cape of Good Hope National Park as well as the Boulder’s Coastal Park, home to hundreds of breeding African Penguins.
The site serves as a breeding centre for endangered birds and animals, and you can walk around large aviaries and even a night house to see captive kiwi. Abel Tasman is popular for its easy hiking trail along the coast and kayaking, keep an eye out for New Zealand Fur Seals and Spotted Shags. Image by Dunedin NZ, Creative Commons.
On our first morning after breakfast, my group and the teens piled onto a boat and headed out to Eastern Egg Rock, once again the breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins (as well as a host of other seabirds) thanks to biologist Dr. Stephen Kress. A Magnificent Frigatebird’s feathers weigh more than its skeleton.
The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. Because Midway is home to endangered species ( e.g. , Laysan Duck, Hawaiian Monk Seal), FWS must also comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This will focus on the requirements of NEPA.

The Ross Sea is the most productive stretch of water in the Southern Ocean, teeming with large predatory fish, whales, seals, penguins and other animals that form the last intact marine ecosystem on Earth. There are 11 species of birds that breed in the Ross Sea region. Enough History – Back to the Future. And the Mammals.
When breeding, the female finds a cavity in a tree and seals the entrance. As the female similarly relies on the male to feed it during incubation (being locked in a cavity), the death of the male is a major reason for breeding failure. Probably Wikipedia is more specialized on birds than the HBW.
The shorebirds continue to migrate into the Northern Hemisphere to breed. Another activity that anybody anywhere in the world can contribute too is becoming a Seal Spotter. You look at photos taken by drones of Australian Fur Seals around Phillip Island and count them. You can follow their migration daily now on this website.
Food instability also appears to be driving down the weight of adult Puffins, and delaying their breeding. For now, though, the Puffins have returned to Seal Island in Maine and are trying their best to raise healthy families. You can watch them in action through through Audubon’s Project Puffin webcams.
Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. But beyond these two species the rest of the petrels are supposed to feed excluisively at sea.
The road was under water in three sections and the Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilts were using the clarity of the water over the sealed road and the lack of hiding places to their advantage. With the first rains we get mass frog breeding events and the flooded land is covered in tadpoles.
Come September most of the summer seabird people had left, but there were a small number of seabirds still breeding and so I stayed behind for three years to continue their monitoring and do the migrant landbird surveys, as well as the Great White Shark surveys. The island is a migrant trap supreme, but it is quieter in early September.
Their population is in serious decline, so their breeding colonies are monitored by biologists. It was so great, and it sealed my admiration for Veronica’s amazing dedication and skill.”. “But lets see … I’d say one of my most memorable releases is that of a Purple Martin , a species of special concern in California.
We also try to re-nest uninjured baby birds so we don’t interfere with a bird’s breeding cycle. Did you know a bird’s body has the ability to seal a small puncture wound within minutes? Wild bird rehabilitators want bird parents to feed their own babies. After all, “Mother knows best.” Suspect” dog or cat interactions.
One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Like the other hornbills, it nests in a tree cavity, in which the female seals herself in using droppings and food remains. Now pairs of hornbills feed outside this correspondent’s window”.

They had to cancel a big project that would have showcased polar bears and seals. That will happen, says the vet who's spent the past 15 summers in the arctic, when polar bears reach a point where only captive breeding can save them from extinction -- a day that's on the horizon. But don't feel too bad for them.
That said, the purpose is to cover the world-wide puffin picture, and North American puffin redoubts like Eastern Egg Rock, Matinicus Rock, and Machias Seal Island (confusingly referred to by the joint term Matinicus Seal Island in at least one instance.)
The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year. But marrying a widow and thus getting access to scientific information was not the only remarkable event in his life.

Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. miles long.
The Crowned Hornbill is among those hornbills in which during incubation the female seals herself into a tree cavity using her own droppings. Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos.
It is at the breeding season, however, that the Western Gull accomplishes real mischief. Warm, damp and squishy.

And whether the return is a permanent one or not remains to be seen as those factors sealing my fate as a regular contributor are still binding me to this day. Yes, Germans were a particularly supersticious breed in the days of old, and would not dare to use the word devil even when cursing. Well folks, it’s been a while.
