Then sometimes when you see these birds actively regaining their energy and getting ready for defending territories and breeding, they give the impression that their migration had just been a short jog around the block rather than a marathon across desert, mountains, and oceans.

They breed up here, and spend their winters (usually) in the lower reaches of the Arctic and near polynyas (year round ice free waters) such as the North Water Polynya between Ellesmere Island and Groenland. They are able to breed at the age of 5-6 weeks so it is easy to see, given the right conditions how quickly their population can grow.

The sun was shining, the grounds are beautiful, and I know a little bit more about art now so I could appreciate what we were looking at as something other than a jungle gym, though I was still sorely tempted to see if I could still climb those giant orange doohickeys. We also observed some evidence of other species breeding.

They often build their nests in open savannas where it sticks out like a sore thumb. I feel blessed to live in Colorado where I can see these beauties in migration and breeding. The wings and back are marked with a striking rufous color and while perched the large, yellow cere and extended gape stand out.

Lick granuloma is a serious skin problem in dogs and occurs when dogs continuously lick a certain area, which then becomes inflamed and sore. There are some breeds that are commonly affected by lick granuloma; these include Dobermans, Great Danes, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Border Collies.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011.
