Proposal 2013-A-6 would split the shearwater taxon baroli , which breeds on several Atlantic island groups (the Azores, Canaries, Selvages, and Madeira) and strays to North American waters, from its current position as part of the Little Shearwater ( Puffinus assimilis ) complex. Sage Sparrow split. Shearwater split.

Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. Northern strays include Razorbill , Common Eider , Lapland Longspur, and many more within the city limits of Miami. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here.

Aplomado Falcon ( Falco femoralis ) by Jon David Nelson Shakeups for shearwaters and murrelets Xantus’s Murrelet ( Synthliboramphus hypoleucus ) has been split into California-breeding Scripps’s Murrelet ( Synthliboramphus scrippsi ) and Baja-breeding Guadalupe Murrelet ( Synthliboramphus hypoleucus ).

Although they breed on the west coast of Florida, Snowy Plover is a rare stray to this part of the state. Song Sparrow is a genuine rarity in Miami-Dade. This Lincoln’s Sparrow is far more common. The last time I was here, the National Park Director, Dr Theodoros Naziridis, told me they were waiting for a really high water level to pull the floating concrete raft (intended for breeding of pelicans) further away so the pile of rocks it was anchored to could become a foundation for the new wooden platform.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. Here’s hoping this bird makes it back to its home turf to breed and comes back to spend another winter in New York State! Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird.
