The trees lining the harbours can contain anything from House Sparrow (yes, they are still here!), If you have to rely on public transport there’s quite a few options. Many species come here to winter, breed or moult despite the presence of six refineries. The birds are very approachable.

It is the largest woodpecker in Europe (to describe its size, I’ll tell you that Goldeneyes breed in the holes this pecker makes). They are colourful and small, some mere newspaper kiosks transported here, barely big enough for a bed and fishing rods.

And even though transportation is so easy and inexpensive, prepare to walk a lot. Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. 133 Eurasian Tree Sparrow. Plus, taxis are cheaper than you’d expect. So don’t be afraid! Do your research. 9 Little Grebe. 10 Great Crested Grebe. 4 in Starling Inlet.

I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family. And not so new, I’m looking forward to using them.

Below are a few suggestions of sites within the city that can easily be reached using public transport. The flowering trees are likely to be visited by Plain Parakeets , Swallow-tailed Hummingbirds and Bananaquits while the lawns are always likely to bring a Rufous-bellied Thrush or a Rufous-collared Sparrow.
