Earlier in the day, as we ventured out towards the deep waters off of Malpais, Costa Rica at 6 in the morning, another Galapagos Shearwater was the first real pelagic species we encountered. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. Were there going to be any birds?

With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. During the final stages of the Pan-European bird-atlassing work last year, computer models of Serbian ranges for some 150 bird species were produced for the first time ever. New target species for the next spring field trip. The consequences were amusing. Cannot wait to see it published, but it will take a few more years.

But your reason to check the canyon is a White-throated Dipper that breeds there and with some luck, you may even encounter a Rock Bunting. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour. Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). July is that boring period after the breeding and prior to migration season. Turtle-Doves and Red-backed Shrikes were showing particularly well, in the air were both Barn Swallows and, more numerous, Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), junipers were decorated by numerous Bee-eaters, plus European Stonechat and a Corn Bunting.

In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever.
