The White-rumped Swift Apus caffer , a tropical African breeding species, was only discovered breeding in Europe in the 1960s. The swifts arrive, seek the swallows out, find their nests and evict the tenants!

The rise of the urban falcon

The falcons’ low-point was 1963, when only three breeding pairs were known in southern England, and only 13% of Welsh eyries were occupied. It is good to report, too, that the clergy has been generally supportive of their high-rise tenants. The peregrine’s comeback was due to protection and the birds’ own powers of recovery.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.
