Africa’s pelicans can be a bit confusing on the identification front as Great White does show an overall pink blush in its plumage during breeding season whereas the pinkest part of Pink-backed Pelican is its lower back, which is only seen in flight! This time it was stood amongst the Greater Sand Plovers and one Lesser Sand Plover that still had breeding plumage and several Red-necked Stint. The Pied Oystercatcher pairs are all in their breeding territories and we can expect to find eggs laid in the first week of July along the coast here. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing some successful Pied Oystercatcher parenting again this breeding season. The Hawksbill Turtle was well camouflaged, but its shape gave it away!

Walking north I soon encountered a fresh Flatback Turtle nest from the previous night’s high tide and that should hatch out in about 2 months all going well. The nests have been monitored for some years now so there is now some baseline data on how often the Flatback Turtles nest on Cable Beach and how successful they are.

I often cover 45 kilometres in a day whilst I monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding, but I do need to plan carefully around large tides. The risk of bird or turtle nests being crushed by vehicles above the high tide mark is a possibility, but of course it is hard to police these rules.

A friend who volunteers each year to monitor Flatback Turtles breeding along the coast was invited and also two young Dutch shorebird research students. It is important to drive slowly due to the crossing of the road of Eastern Long-necked Turtles ! We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity. Eastern Long-necked Turtle. There are 70 species that are known to breed in the park.

From Beljarica, go back to the Kovilovo turn off, turn left/north onto Zrenjanin road for some 9 km / 5.5 mi, to the Vrbovski turnoff.

July is that boring period after the breeding and prior to migration season. Turtle-Doves and Red-backed Shrikes were showing particularly well, in the air were both Barn Swallows and, more numerous, Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), junipers were decorated by numerous Bee-eaters, plus European Stonechat and a Corn Bunting.

They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. Besides their piratical nature, they skim the surface of the water and use their strongly hooked bill to grab small fish, squid, baby turtles and in some locations, sea iguanas. The first creek to the north is Willie Creek and we often visit it on the south side when we monitor the breeding pairs of Pied Oystercatchers. But your reason to check the canyon is a White-throated Dipper that breeds there and with some luck, you may even encounter a Rock Bunting. Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? It seems like there is great diversity in this continent.
