Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed. Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake. Then, there was a herd of buffaloes.
This is beyond a parent bird trying to lure a predator away from the nest, or a group of buffalos driving off a pack of lions from a calf. This is clearly the most altruistic behaviour I have ever seen, and I fail to explain it.
As someone who lives close enough to Buffalo to feel both tremendous fear and relief regarding the 7 feet of snow that engulfed that part of Western NY, I can assure you: November weather is WILD. No snow here!

In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. While I was actually photographing a herd of buffalo, this Merlin buzzed my head several times. The number one bird on my list was the iconic Horned Puffin.
Bufflehead comes from the now archaic word buffle , meaning ‘buffalo.’ ’ Bufflehead is the condensed version of ‘Buffalo Head’, the name these ducks were originally given. I suppose the densely feathered, black and white head of the drake does slightly resemble a buffalo’s head.

Though I leave you behind, child of mine, Never to hear you cry and whine, You I still love and I’ll be up above Watching you give nestlings the shove.
Although it was nothing like going from New York to California or even Buffalo, New York to North Carolina, a change of location, however slight, can bring new birds especially in Costa Rica. As is usual for a birder moving to a new place, I couldn’t wait to see what the new yard would bring.

It is responsible for some of the happiest moments of my childhood, the trips to the Buffalo Museum of Science that kindled my passion for nature; and yet, the quest for specimens ushered some of my favorite species of birds out of the world. Taxidermy is a bizarre art. It is driven by love for animals, but relies on their deaths to exist.
The task of wrestling this topic down into something that the human mind can manage, without losing sight of the big picture because it’s snowing in Buffalo, is likely to be the task of a lifetime for many science communicators.
