Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. Hardly the elegant, natural picture deserving of some seriously stunning birds!

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

In the north of the reserve, by the Tadoba Lake, a herd of Chital Deer is grazing, with a familiar sight of Cattle Egrets around them. Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake.

Awesome Birding at Aripo Savannah

The lush pastures of the Aripo Livestock Station sustained herds of happy Buffalypso , a special breed of T&T beef cattle named for their Water Buffalo heritage and Calypso-happy country. Where we entered the area, the savannah seemed more like Aripo Ranch. In fact, it was. In that regard, Aripo was amazing.

Birding Dongfang and Dongzhai on Hainan

Here, nervous Cattle Egrets trying to quit smoking pace restlessly on buffalos. The closest we got to habitat similar to Dongfang was on the last day of the trip, close to Haikou airport, at Dongzhai. This is an area of narrow, slightly elevated roads passing muddy fields and the occasional fishpond.

We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills. We sat outdoors, shaded by old plane trees and cooled by a short shower falling in the bright sunlight.
