They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).
I can’t honestly remember what the current Russian Doll arrangement is for the skuas, gulls, terns and skimmers, so they are either their own family or a type of skua, gull or tern. Some African Skimmers pass by some African Buffalo. One is even skimming. More African Skimmers, this time with some Yellow-billed Storks .
Shorebirds – or “shorbs” for the cuteness factor (as if that needed any enhancement) – remain one of the most fascinating families of birds for me. In fact, a herd of Cape Buffalo spotted us on the shore here and began gradually moving closer.
In 1938, they were reduced to only 18 birds in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock and only 11 remaining in the non-migratory Louisiana flock. The Aransas-Wood Buffalo flock’s numbers hovered on the edge of collapse until the 1960s, never numbering more than 34 birds in total. By 1950, the Louisiana flock was gone.
While rails are generally described as secretive, the Common Moorhen – also a member of the rail family – certainly is not. Here, nervous Cattle Egrets trying to quit smoking pace restlessly on buffalos. Fine with me – I am always for reducing complexity, whether it makes sense or not.
Then there were a few Hawfinches and two young Black Storks , Little Bittern , Great White Egret , Glossy Ibis , Common Kingfisher , Syrian Woodpecker , Peregrine Falcon , Red-backed Shrike , Lesser Grey Shrike , Collared Flycatcher and a family of Western Yellow Wagtails.
What I do remember is Irv Weinstein, Buffalo’s favorite news guy. The kid would be thankful they had been found, and then they would head back home as one happy family. He was well liked, was part of our community and seeing him on the TV screen was an essential piece of growing up in 80s WNY. Fall migrants!
Typical species include busy Secretarybirds that patrol the grasslands, families of Common Ostrich , White-bellied Bustards , Yellow-throated Sandgrouse , vultures, snake-eagles and numerous seedeaters, including lovely Purple Grenadiers and Green-winged Pytlias , to mention just a few. And of course the big game is an added bonus.
Because when we look at the birds that make up the family Sulidae – not just the tropical boobies, but their burly temperate-zone cousins the gannets as well – we see a pretty incredible group of birds. The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. They are usually found in small family groups perched atop bushes or short trees, from whence they sally out to catch their prey.
It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day. A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches. Purple Roller.

Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed. Out of some 4000 buffaloes still being kept in Greece, about 3000 are at this lake. Then, there was a herd of buffaloes.

So now there are lots of lions, and they like buffalo, so now there are less buffalo. And since the lions like the big buffalo and not the smaller Nyala, the Nyala have increased in numbers.
