THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits.

Neighbor B’s cats are constantly on neighbor A’s property, urinating and defecating all over her garden, spreading disease, maiming and killing the birds who flock to her feeders. Neighbor A’s private property and peace of mind are both suffering because of the cats, which are killing government-protected species. What can she do?

The problem is that people are abandoning and neglecting horses, and to address that problem--to address the problem that people abandon horses--we'll kill the horses? Not approving the institutionalized slaughter of the horses we claim to hold so dear lowers that value. Do we recommend killing those children? Financially).

Another product has been invented that could cut down on the number of wild birds killed by domestic cats. The testimonials all credit Birdsbesafe with reducing the number of birds killed by pet cats. Will the people who determinedly allow their cats to slaughter wild birds use it? Three of my eight are prolific bird killers.

The Nimans move him, as do several other farmers, including one who "apologizes to his animals as they are sent off to slaughter" (244), as if that's any consolation to someone whose life you are about to take when you don't need to. But this plate also holds all of the animals that were killed for your serving of sushi.
