Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? The norm of moderate concern for animals - that animals matter albeit less than humans - permits the (ab)use of animals in vivisection, factory farming, bloodsports and other contexts where animals suffer. Sounds interesting.

Update 10/13/24: Volunteers gathered outside an Aldi store in Dallas, Texas, using megaphones and a life-size gestation crate to take a stand for mother pigs. Flyers were handed out to shoppers, and a leaflet was given to the store manager to pass along to corporate leadership.

Over a month ago, Animal Equality’s global team launched a campaign to remove foie gras from the 2024 Olympic hospitality menu. Foie gras production involves force-feeding ducks and geese multiple times daily until their livers swell up to ten times their natural size. Many animals bleed, pant, shake, and vomit during this process.

However, the factory farm system we have in any country does not lend itself to either of the two criteria. There are probably no happy animals in factory farming (ie. Factory farms are unlikely to be properly and regularly inspected by the USDA. Livestock don’t contribute to campaigns, but agribusiness does.

The veracity of this statement hinges on Scott's definition of "inhumane," and that definition must be very, very restricted, and clearly unrelated to the realities of our modern factory farm system. I don't think anyone is campaigning for "farm" animals to become pets, as many of us don't even think the family cat should be the family cat.
