ANIMAL rights groups have begun a campaign against the dairy industry's treatment of bobby calves. Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Here's the full article from the Weekly Times Now.

I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

Today, March 30th, at 3:00 East Coast time, Susan Soltero of Puerto Rico will interview me live on the air at WALO Radio about Responsible Policies for Animals' 10,000 Years Is Enough campaign to get our universities out of the meat industry! The interview is scheduled for 10-15 minutes of Monday's one-hour show.

Let's deconstruct: The interview reminds me of how the industry views us and how little they know about the community of people who care about the lives of the animals brought into this world for one reason only: to kill and eat them. Perhaps it is the industry's inability to evolve morally that is behind the times.

The number of chickens, turkeys, pigs, cattle and other animals raised and slaughtered in the United States has been growing steadily for decades. This is an issue on which we don’t need to wait for government or industry to act first. Lerner Woodside, Calif., A shift toward more vegetarian options would indeed benefit us all.

On March 11th, RPA sent the governors of all 50 states a letter and two factsheets urging them to help get their land-grant universities (LGUs) out of the meat industry. Take a moment to tell your governor you agree we must get our LGUs out of the meat industry. Below is a press release about the mailing. Another went out last Friday.

Their populations, plus those of other species that ‘wore’ the coveted long, colorful feathers used for women’s fashionable hats, were being dangerously depleted by hunters intent on feeding the millinery industry. Ironically, only the women of one of these campaigns, the suffragette movement, have been recognized and honored.
