Like cats, the rat has been the victim of campaigns to make it the bad guy in terms of disease and damage wildlife. That is just a silly argument made by the rat haters to hide their lack of knowledge as to how biology works and to justify their horrific campaigns of rat-slaughter. Rats are cute! Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast.
I prefer "anti-unnecessary slaughter of sentient nonhumans" and it has nothing to do with perceived modernity. The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting ! Parker uses the term "anti-modern farming activists," which is new to me. Besides, is the "modern" veal crate something to be proud of?
If you believe your dog has a right to a life free of torture and slaughter for no reason, then you really ought to think about extending that right to mice, rats, chickens and fish. See the website for a self-congratulatory description of their efforts to plant trees, but no mention of their slaughter of the birds who might want to land on them. Scroll to the bottom for a list of products you can boycott. Photos of Cooper’s Hawks by Tony Brake.
This mass avian exploitation, amazing and repugnant, ultimately met its end through separate campaigns in the United States and Great Britain, each led by women, mostly upper-middle class women. Both campaigns led to the establishment of national, influential conservation organizations–National Audubon Society in the U.S.
Both, of course, were seen as victories, but the article's author, Richard Foot, asks: Do such successes mean the animal rights movement is winning its long, controversial campaigns to gain the same legal protections for animals as those ascribed to humans? Changes in the manner of slaughter (i.e.,

I don't think anyone is campaigning for "farm" animals to become pets, as many of us don't even think the family cat should be the family cat. He is letting his attachment to eating animals and his attachment to his constituents profiting from their slaughter cloud his decision making.
