For most American birders, the fun and pride behind a CBC (Christmas Bird Count) is without a doubt one of the highlights of the year, this is even more so if you get manage to be the lucky birder that finds that one rare bird that a report needs to be written for, but would you be as excited if that golden bird turned out to be a Canada Goose ?
Normally, I don’t look forward to seeing the Canada Geese on the lake near my Florida home. The post Springtime in Canada Geese Country appeared first on 10,000 Birds. There are too many for the size of the water body, and they don’t migrate. Did I mention they’re loud and a bit aggressive?
“Oh, sweet Canada, Canada, Canada” is perhaps the best-best known of birdsong mnemonics in North America, familiar to birders as an aid to remembering the voice of the White-throated Sparrow ( Zonotrichia albicollis ). Canada is a pretty sweet place – and not just because of all that maple syrup its vast forests produce.
I had no luck finding any “good” geese or the blackbird, but I was fortunate enough to come upon a Cooper’s Hawk that had found a very big meal to enjoy, a road-killed Canada Goose. The hawk clearly cared neither about my presence nor that of cars whizzing past between us.
We were travelling to historic Cape Race, when we encountered a traffic jam. Four Woodland Caribou were trotting along in the middle of the road. That is not what we expected to see, as our guide took us to the most south-easterly corner of Newfoundland in early July 2018. We were out to find Willow Ptarmigan and seabirds.
Five candidates made the final cut: Common Loon , Snowy Owl , Gray Jay , Black-capped Chickadee , and of course, Canada Goose , like the specimen above photographed by Daniel D’Auria and posted on Wikimedia Commons.
The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) welcomed 52 new diplomates following the board certification examination it held June 26 at Prometric test sites in the United States, Canada, and Singapore.
On the other hand, the Canada Geese have both safety in numbers and famously aggressive personalities. Only two cranes stood to take on the dozen or so Canada Geese, and from my vantage point it looked like the latter had the upper hand, hissing and wagging their tails if the larger birds got close.
Smoke from the worst wildfire season in Canada's history has been triggering air quality alerts throughout the United States, threatening human and animal health.
It’s a freezing, quiet January morning in Denver, Colorado. The year is 2011 and I might be the only person left in the hotel. Everyone else at the academic conference left early the day before–panels cancelled, vendors packed–in fear of a major snowstorm.
The Canada Goose sits on its nest of pine cones. With so much to look at, you wouldn’t think my eyes would be drawn to a pine cone nest on the ground, complete with a Canada Goose parent shielding her delicate eggs from the nearby antelope species. The Canada Geese (on the right side) show no fear. Where were the babies?
There are 22 species of woodpeckers in the US and Canada. They bang away at trees with their beaks, without knocking themselves silly. They excavate nest holes, which later become homes for other birds and small mammals, making them a keystone species. I have seen 21 of them. Here, I share my favourites. Red-headed Woodpecker 2.
Politics Canada' Environment groups were hard hit in the first round in 2012-13, but the net has since widened to snare social justice and poverty groups, among others. Remember, voting for conservatives is almost always bad for birds.
Very occasionally though, one might stray down the eastern seaboard of the USA, but for the most part, those that breed in arctic Canada migrate towards Europe and swell numbers there during the winter. The Common Ringed Plover’s two-toned call is lower and less sophisticated than the Semi-palmated’s.
I’ve lived all my life in Toronto, Canada. I have been lucky to be able to travel to other places to bird, but Toronto is where my birding adventures began. There is always so much to see in every season. Toronto is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The three rivers that run through the city have carved out ravines.
It returned last year with a small flock of Canada Geese and then again this year with a much bigger flock, nearing 150, that contained more oddities. But then compare the size of it against the Canada Geese. It is far bigger than a Canada Goose whilst it should be noticeably smaller (even a Greater should be lesser).
Also from the Philly area, where Canada Geese are concerned, where is the love ?). News black-crowned night herons boreal forest canada geese climate change darwin’s finch fledging fork-tailed drongo new york times' Animal and bird rehabbers are awesome people, but even they suffer the occasional bad apple— in this case, really bad.
Spring in Ontario, Canada, is the time for colour and I love colourful things. The following male birds dazzle, as they strut their stuff for the females. Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Nothing is more stunning than the ruby flashes from the male’s gorget.

Matt Timpf is doing a Canada Big Year. I’m not at all sure what his goal is other than seeing lots of birds but Canada is a big country so I bet he succeeds! You can keep up with Matt at Canada Big Year 2013. That would be more species than are on his life list! Follow his adventures at Greg and Birds.

(The pair shot last year in Kentucky belonged to Operation Migration’s project establishing a migratory flock in the eastern United States; there is also the last true wild flock , which winters in Texas and summers in Canada.) A reward of $1000 has been offered for information helping authorities track down the shooters; more info is here.
They migrate north through the Western United States, breeding in pockets all the way up through Canada. Compare that to the water body’s other regulars – Canada Geese – that reach “only” 43 inches with a wingspan of nearly 67 inches. Did I mention they’re huge?
American Redstart Canada Warbler Blackburnian Warbler Also I saw my first Black-and-White Warbler but I did not get a picture because my brain had trouble believing my eyes: I saw a bird that acted like a piculet, working the twigs upside down, but looked like a warbler.
Those of you who have been waiting with bated breath for the past few months in anticipation can finally exhale: Canada has a new national bird. To attain the top spot, the Gray Jay beat out contenders such as the Common Loon , Snowy Owl , Canada Goose , and Black-capped Chickadee. Adorable photo above by Corey).

Look for him somewhere in Canada! Summer in the United States unofficially begins this weekend. Are you on the road? I’m on my way down to NYC, which apparently so unnerved Corey that he fled the country. How about you? Where will you be this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below.
That is a lot of birds in what is essentially Alaska, Canada, and the lower 48 states in one year. With a Rustic Bunting in Homer, Alaska, Neil Hayward has tied Sandy Komito’s American Birding Assocation area big year record of 745 (+3) species. But whats with the (+3)? That’s where things get kind of fun.
The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) welcomed 47 new diplomates following the board certification examination it held July 8 at Prometric test sites in the United States, Canada, Caribbean, and Singapore.
There were also several hundred Canada Geese to pick through and whole bunch more gulls. Though I tried to turn a couple small Canada Geese into Cackling Geese I just couldn’t string them into the rarer species. Digging through the geese and gulls was not as awarding as scoping the ducks had been.
What turned out to be an epic journey began in Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Pilots ‘n Paws Canada stepped up to the plate and volunteered to fly the little birds to Quebec. The 2014 season demonstrated the power of cooperation, communication, and determination to save three Chimney Swifts.

Sure, I can see Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals and Canada Geese in my own backyard, year-round, but closing my eyes and picturing those species against a snowy backdrop makes me smile. I literally fist-pumped the air when I spotted Long-tailed Ducks and a Surf Scoter.

Both geese are quite closely related as they are members of the genus Branta , which also includes the Redbreasted Goose, Brent Goose, Cackling Goose and Canada Goose. No prizes for guessing this is a Canada Goose x Greylag Not that geese have to be members of the same genus to hybridise.
all three of the Greater White-fronted Geese we spotted with a bunch of Canada Geese. We were surprised to see three Greater White-fronted Geese there as well, amid the hundreds of Canada Geese , but they turned out to be the three that we had just seen. It really has been a great winter to see both species in New York.
I visited a place that has historically been auspicious for Cackling Goose but couldn’t even find a Canada there. Birding is better when you keep sports out of it anyway! Birding has been terribly slow here in the Rochester area. If a pair of Mallards didn’t turn up, I would have gone completely birdless.
I have been watching them each year from our 18th-floor condo in Toronto, Canada. On 28 April, looking through my spotting scope, I saw a fuzzy, white head rising above the edge of their nest. I call them hapless because it took them four years to have a viable nesting season.
