A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. We concluded the days by unsuccessfully scanning a golf course flock of Canada Geese for Cackling Geese , then returned to Missoula chilly but triumphant.

A Lake Reborn… sort of

My outing’s total count for water-dependent waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, gulls, and terns (I’m leaving land-loving Cattle Egrets out of this count) was around 120; the count for a similar date in 2018 was around 2000 individuals. west coast, Pacific Northwest, and western Canada. They’re riding horses on my lake.

Cattle Egrets might well get them when they leap out of the way of our domestic replacement bison. It wasn’t until I noticed the “locusts” here in Montana that I got curious about them.
