These policies deal with noncommercial transportation of pets, management of dog and catpopulations, and raw pet food diets, among other issues. The AVMA House of Delegates, during its regular winter session, being held January 5-6, 2024, in Chicago, will vote on six resolutions that would amend AVMA policies.
The AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) amended several AVMA policies addressing a range of veterinary-related issues, , from raw diets for dogs and cats, to dog and catpopulation management, to animal loss support services, and safe, noncommercial transport of pets in motor vehicles, during its regular winter session, held January 5-6 in Chicago in conjunction (..)
TNR has repeatedly been shown to fail to reduce free-ranging catpopulations,” the authors say (perhaps because the rate of sterilization in a discrete population has never been close to one hundred percent); and, in any event, neutered or not, feral cat lives are nasty, brutish and short.
The number of birds, and other animals, killed by feral Cats is probably large , but it either varies a great deal from place to place, or the estimates are so inaccurate that they, the estimates themselves, vary a great deal from place to place. We do know this: In areas where feral catpopulations exist, they are often well established.
While cats do not fill a specific niche normally held by a native carnivore, there are reasons to believe that some of those birds would have been eaten by a wild predator had the cats not been in play. In other words, cats may be a very severe problem in some places, but in other places not a factor at all.
Feeding bans don’t stop cats from “multiplying”; neutering does. Trap-Neuter-Return is the only effective way to stabilize feral catpopulations. Those who violate the ordinance can be fined $200. Since TNR requires scheduled feeding to be successful, it is impossible to carry out with a feeding ban in place.
But this is more than a television event, BIG CAT WEEK is an extension of the Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world.
It'll be my area's first group dedicated to reducing the feral catpopulation! Finally, I was asked to participate in a new TNR group in my town that started largely because of my oodles of questions and setting of policy for Project Treadstone! And of course, I will use the meetings as an opportunity for vegan outreach.
A while back I asked the question, How much bird is there, anyway? which was a comparative look at apparent, visible, often in your face biomass we observe when we as diurnal primates look around us. I had noted that if you took a quick look around you’d think there were a lot of birds and very few mammals.
