If it doesn’t find enough to eat, it might become too tired to watch for predators and be snatched up by a domestic cat or any number of animals that are always watching, eternally waiting for an easy lunch. It’s notable that during his 40 plus years of watching local wildlife, he had never seen a Marine Toad catch a bird.

Even so, he still knew many species and always yearned to learn about the wildlife he encountered. Fast forwarding to Costa Rica, to be honest, you won’t find any grouse around here. The easiest of the wood-quails in Costa Rica is the Spotted Wood-Quail. Fred would have been proud.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. However, I’ll bestow that honor upon my first local Common Grackles of spring.

As part of the Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil giveaway we asked readers of 10,000 Birds to name the bird in Brazil that they would like to see more than any other species. My first tropical birding trip was to Costa Rica when I was 8 and the Jabiru was at the top of my list even then, but sadly none were encountered.
