On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. Part of the 3,000 strong penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Cape Town.

There was a safety briefing in their centre before the ride to the boat, a handsome and powerful cat with rather luxurious leather seats that would not have looked out of place on a jet (rather more comfortable as well!). It was a well oiled machine, quite unlike the majority of whale watching trips I have been on in the past.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species.
