feral cat with a Golden-crowned Kinglet by Isaac Grant. Pity the poor souls at Alley Cat Allies. So on 16 October, which Alley Cat Allies has turned into “National Feral Cat Day,” local governments got an earful. After all, someone is taking care of all those cats, right? Example one?
The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. She said she has a cat that stays indoors — unwillingly.
Sponsors Are Able to Contribute As Little as $10 to Help an Animal Get Spayed/Neutered. Every year 3-4 million dogs and cats die in animal shelters in the United States because there aren’t enough homes for them. Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. Frizzell explained that a large population of feral cats is ultimately detrimental to the overall environmental health of the base, its native species and ecosystems. Feral cats may be an animal problem, but there is a human solution.
Cory Williams, of the famed "Mean Kitty" YouTube videos (which are really funny), has a good how-to video about doing a trap, spay/neuter, and release of feral cats in your neighborhood. The video was done on behalf of the Stray Cat Alliance. Tags: feral cats.
Caring for the homeless cat population in Los Angeles, FixNation , offers free spay and neuter services to caregivers of community cats. FixNation sterilizes more than 70 cats each day and will have successfully trapped, neutered and returned 80,000 cats by the summer of 2012.
Some time ago a neighborhood stray cat came to the yard to have her kittens. This little mama cat was super smart and found her way into the hot tub, and here are her little kittens snuggled up in a flower pot. Sadly, shelters and rescues are full of cats and are already full. They sure are cute though, aren’t they?
When taking the issue to simplest common denominator, spaying/neutering is essentially exercising human dominance over non-human animals. But my stance is also categorized under Gray Matters because, in my perfect world, we wouldn't be spaying or neutering anybody. How contradictory is that?
We recently got a chance to check out a great new book called Pet Photography 101: Tips for taking better photos of your dog or cat ! And of course, there are plenty of fun photos of cats and dogs in the book as well! Darlow is also a judge in the Humane Society’s annual photography contest the Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest.
They will spay/neuter, vaccinate, tip ears and microchip , and they do not test. Sure, it takes an hour to get there and I have no idea how I'm going to get 10 cats in my car or even trap 10 cats, but I'm still enjoying the honeymoon phase of the concept and reveling in some kind of victory I had nothing to do with.
I received a call yesterday from a woman who started a coalition for homeless cats. She said her Trapper Man could go to the Project Treadstone site--last night and this morning--and trap up to 10 cats that she would bring to Pahokee. She has brought over a dozen cats there in just two weeks, 11 of whom were pregnant.

The mascot for this year’s National Justice for Animals Week is Adam, a spunky black cat who was set on fire by two teenage girls in a vicious attack in Santa Rosa, California, as an eight-week-old feral kitten. Adam survived third-degree burns on 45% of his body and the case grabbed headlines around the world.
Rock & Rawhide , the charity that helps increase adoption levels of dogs and cats in shelters, announced today that it is included in Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C)’s latest advertising campaign, “New York’s Kindest” for their donations and assistance in increasing adoption levels through distraction therapy.
Most shelter animals are spayed or neutered, have been treated for worms, and have at least their first set of shots. Shift-It Tip: If you’re set on a purebred dog or cat, buy one from a rescue association instead of getting a pedigree from a breeder. Pets are the same way. Save $$: Up to $200 or more per year on pet toys.
This is Los Angeles’s premier animal-related fundraising event benefiting the following non-profit rescue organizations: The Rescue Train, Best Friends Animal Society, Animal Alliance, A Dog’s Life Rescue, Stray Cat Alliance, Four-Legged Friends Foundation, and Molly’s Mutts & Meows. From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. As for Project Treadstone, after several false starts, trapping, spaying and neutering will resume next week. to see the full effects of this type of major surgery.
Let me tell you – I’ve met some street dogs who curl up with cats and babies, and I’ve met some pet dogs (like my human’s grandmother’s Chihuahua!) Poor countries with lots of trash on the streets and no spay/neuter clinics definitely have more street dogs. Millions of American street dogs (and cats!)
California’s shelter populations have declined in recent decades, and most pet owners (70 percent dog, 84 percent cat) are acting responsibly and spaying/neutering their pets without government involvement.
To the Editor: “ Should Most Pet Owners Be Required to Neuter Their Animals? ,” by Verlyn Klinkenborg (Editorial Observer, July 30), is right: “The rate at which dogs are purchased and euthanized in this country is not a sign of our affection for them. This crisis calls for mandatory spay and neuter legislation.
Project Treadstone If anyone in Palm Beach County wants to get involved in the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) of feral cats, now is the time, as the county's Spay Shuttle is back in business (but for a whopping $40/cat rather than the original $15), and Pahokee ($25/cat) is open as well.
Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. It started with donation requests for spay and neuteringcats but then quickly transferred to a trap, neuter and release organization. On the one hand, it’s better than doing nothing with a feral cat colony.
