But there is one Cape bird that stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to character – the African Penguin. An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. All it takes is a trip to Boulders Beach in Cape Town to get up close and personal with these comical penguins.

Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand. Our next stops were at Portobello, for the Royal Albatross Center, and the Blue Penguin beach. Here are a couple of those Blue Penguins.

I wanted Penguins. They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) Jeff Gordon at Stony Point Penguin Colony (hopefully, he didn’t have any penguins under his vehicle). And Sunbirds. And so, I went on the American Birding Association Safari to South Africa.

Jean Loscalzo is a penguin buff (Can you blame her?) and would love to watch Rockhopper Penguins. My Brazilian wish bird would be Rockhopper Penguin: raucous, feisty birds with really cool haircuts, a sort of disheveled yellow-black shaggy look that they wear well. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.
