The reason Kaikoura is such a great place to see albatrosses and whales is one and the same, and the same reason indeed that Monterrey in California is a great place to watch whales and albatross.

On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. Part of the 3,000 strong penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Cape Town.

We set out with Black Cat Cruises to see these diminutive dolphins and to have a swim with them. Black Cat Cruises have a high success rate generally (over 90%) and actually refund the difference if the dolphin’s don’t come on over. Akaroa Harbour. Well, I say we. I had decided to take the non-swimming passenger route.

Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.
