This is a very hot and dry region known as El Chaco where many interesting bird species can be found. The closer we got to J.V. Crested Hornero. Lark-like Bushrunner. The cute couple!

Nevertheless, the one question will remain as to why we toss this habitat aside as if we all collectively made a decision to pick one habitat and dismiss it. We’re passing the Dasada village where shop owners and artisans are opening their doors, collecting rubbish in the street and burning it, while standing around those small fires and warming themselves up. A Cattle Tyrant rode shotgun on the collecting bucket, leaping down into the scoop when it spied something to eat. Two paddle-powered weed collectors work full time to mitigate the profusion of surface growth and are accompanied by birds who feed from the insects disturbed as the tractors plough up and down through the weeds.

A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans.

You will either have to leave it at the airport and collect it later (using up precious time), or carry it with you in hot, humid conditions. The SMRT is predicted to take 50 minutes to the gardens, but a cab would probably manage it in 30 minutes. Taxis can usually be found quickly and easily unless it is raining.

In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). La Barca de Vejer is close to the Barbate river, and the nearby Barbate Marismas provide feeding areas for the ibises.

We returned to Lake Argyle before heading into town and the male Great Bowerbirds still had a bower in a very similar spot to last year with a similar collection of rocks and bones. One gate had Glossy Ibis, Pied Heron, White-faced Heron, Little Pied Cormorant and Cattle Egrets all roosting together. Fairy Martin collecting mud.
