There was the Botteri’s Sparrow giving a larger Canyon Towhee a piece of its mind, on my way into town: The reservoir itself was underwhelming, only offering me a collection of white Egrets (Cattle, Snowy and Great) and a single Great Blue Heron.

A Purple Heron on Chongming Island Cattle Egrets , also on Chongming Island Black-winged Stilts … … and Grey-headed Lapwings are their neighbors in the flooded rice paddies of the island. A Light-vented Bulbul collecting nest building material – or is it for nest renovation already? Not so for the Little Grebe.

One of this species’ many peculiarities is that it has a digestive system unique amongst birds: Hoatzins use bacterial fermentation in the front part of the gut to break down the vegetable material they consume, much as cattle and other ruminants do.
