The real shock came, when at the last minute, I realized that they were not Greater Egrets , nor the smaller Snowy Egrets , but Cattle Egrets – Bubulcus ibis. A Short-eared Owl , a winter visit from Europe, appeared briefly hunting low over a distant ditch and two Cattle Egrets , very recent colonizers of the UK, flew in to forage between the feet of a group of cows.

The first thing to appear was its yellow bill – a locally rare Cattle Egret ! The local levee warden sometimes shepherds his cows here, and the eagle would stand right above him, giving him no second glance. This was only my seventh observation of this species in Europe (3 in Greece, 4 in Serbia). I am a stranger in his realm.

The cows and their entourage of Cattle Egrets sloshed through the pastures, each time they moved we lurched forward hoping to see a disturbed Grey-breasted Crake hop into view – but alas, no such luck even though we were hearing the little skulkers consistently. It seems that they especially enjoy being around cattle, which helps lead to the number one cause of nest failure, trampling (the number two reason is predation). The night before we had learned that the lapwings preferred nesting in areas with plants of the genus Artemisia , especially when the area had been well-grazed.

Cattle wandered this pasture along with me (one cow even attempted to taste my carbon fiber tripod). I can watch where I step on my way to my survey spot, the cattle aren’t so cautious, Bobolinks need to be ready to move when the unaware bovine wanders near near the nest. It’s a good strategy for Bobolinks to have.
