Attempting a photograph of the cattle beside the highway was pointless, because you only got photographs of locusts! The bird-life has definitely benefitted by the recent outbreak of locusts. Recently the highway has been covered in locusts and you can’t avoid them. The recent swarms of locusts.
The official definition of CR status says the species could be gone within ten years, or could lose 80 per cent of its population within three generations – whichever comes first. That can be traced back in time to 1875, when Alfred Brehm wrote that he had found Sociable Lapwings only alongside the domestic cattle.
Cattle Egrets are very common outside of the most urbanized areas. You will definitely see it, everywhere except in dense woods. My goal is to answer the question “Which birds could I hope to see with minimal effort, should I visit the beautiful and historic UNESCO World Heritage City of Morelia?”
We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. Discovering this breeding colony of Yellow-billed Spoonbills was definitely the highlight of our walk. Adult breeding plumage in Yellow-billed Spoonbills.
The lush pastures of the Aripo Livestock Station sustained herds of happy Buffalypso , a special breed of T&T beef cattle named for their Water Buffalo heritage and Calypso-happy country. Where we entered the area, the savannah seemed more like Aripo Ranch. In fact, it was. In that regard, Aripo was amazing.
Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations.
I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! My definition of Heaven clearly involves a place hot as Hell, but with so many birds one has to shovel them away to clear the path. Could they possibly be…? And I know I am in Heaven.
Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills.
Right beside the road and the irrigation channel were a mixed flock of Cattle Egret , Intermediate Egrets and Little Black Cormorants all “caged” in. These Egrets and Little Black Cormorants are definitely using this structure to their advantage. Another significant flock of birds were to be found “caged” in!
What would birding be without the prospect of twitching the occassional vagrant, which is by definition an uninvited, though in these cases welcome, guest. One wonders how innocent the Spotted Owl finds the rampant range expansion of the Barred Owl. Perhaps our outrage at invasive species can be a bit hypocritical at times.
Despite the area being an industrial park there are some great birding opportunities to be had at Changi Business Park and it is definitely worth a visit. There were numerous other bird species in the area that we encountered at various other locations around Singapore. Paddyfield Pipit.
After all, on a normal year this body of water only offers a good number of American Coots , a handful of hybrid, semi-domestic ducks, a few Pied-billed Grebes, Cattle, Snowy and Great Egrets, a Great Blue Hero n or two, and perhaps a few Spotted Sandpipers and Killdeer.
They range from encyclopedic listings of facts to loving portraits, like the Falcon essay, which sets its tone with its definition of falcons as “the jet fighters of the bird world.” If there is an aspect of the book that reflects author personality, it is these family accounts.
If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects.
Another puzzling thing to me, as for me, the ideal number of people to live with would be somewhere between zero and one but definitely not above 1. This Cattle Egret has just read a paper stating that it would be 3.6 End of side note. To female readers then: the Pheasant-tailed Jacana. No wonder it looks a bit pissed off.
Beset by poaching by cattle ranchers, habitat loss, DDT, and lead poisoning (from consuming shotgun pellets embedded in the condor’s carrion fare), populations of this enormous New World vulture fell into a serious decline in the twentieth century. So, what is Kölsch, exactly?
The definition of a borrow pit is rather odd, because you are not actually borrowing anything. It is on your left and you will no doubt either see the birdlife in the area or notice the cattle wandering on the edge of the highway. It takes roughly 50 minutes to get there and it is not signposted.
Suppose someone enjoys drinking the blood of cattle and hogs. On the above definitions the wool and the milk of such animals would not be animal products. If, on the other hand, the legs are produced in factory conditions, there is a moral objection.
That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city. Too far for a clear camera shot, but most definitively the Egyptian Vultures. My first ever Balkan Egyptian Vultures!
Cattle Egrets are thoroughly modern birds – they were among the first species to ditch mailed letters for faxes, then switched to email early, and now (at least in China) mostly communicate by WeChat. They are also early adopters with regard to their foraging – nowadays mostly following tractors rather than cattle.
The first 25 kilometres of the Gibb River Road from the east is good bitumen, enabling those without four-wheel drives to visit some of the gorges, but there is a warning straight away that it is unfenced cattle country and everything roams free. The start of the Gibb River Road from the east.
Apparently, in some regions where Cattle Egrets do not primarily associate with cattle but with other animals, their name in the local language changes accordingly. So, you would have a “Hippopotamus Egret”, a “Rhinoceros Egret” or an “Elephant Bird” ( source ).
Cattle Egrets were easily found in any open areas, particularly around the airport and the eastern end of the island. Neotropical migrants were seriously lacking, with only Prairie Warbler and Northern Waterthrush definite wintering passerines. I couldn’t believe how many Clapper Rails were in the mangroves along 250.
This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. It is impressive and is very hard to show the extent of the whole crater, but we were definitely not disappointed! Stood on the rim.
Furthermore, I have business / bird survey trips scheduled (nearly definite) to the following locations: Indonesia: West Java and South Kalimantan, probably in October. If all my almost-definite travel plans actually work out (not including Sumatra and Africa), I should see around 550 species again in 2014, just as I did in 2012 and 2013.
On a visit in October 2022, I found ibises feeding with cattle in scruffy roadside paddocks adjacent to the marismas ( photographs below ). It may not be beautiful, but it’s a bird with definite charisma. La Barca de Vejer is close to the Barbate river, and the nearby Barbate Marismas provide feeding areas for the ibises.
The Brown-breasted Flycatcher is definitely in the first category. The richest Cattle Egrets in Nabang own more than 50 animals each and guard them carefully. If you think that the photos shown here are not as good as the ones taken by Craig Brelsford and shown on his Shanghaibirding website, I fully agree with you.
I think there is a potential joke somewhere in a person saying in an exaggerated French accent “I have no egrets” (try imagining the French accent please, otherwise this is definitely not funny. Even with the French accent, it probably isn’t, but that is another problem).
The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” ” The definition of the word CONSERVATION is “the act or an instance of conserving or keeping from change, loss, or injury.” But I digress.
More and more parts of it are fenced off and closed to the public – given that China is a socialist country, the definition of socialism I learned at school surely must have been wrong. Somehow I did not think Cattle Egrets would eat dragonflies (shouldn’t they eat beef, at least judging from their name?) but they do.
