The most famous of these is Cattle Egret , but Masked Duck looked like it might make things interesting for a while and Antillean Nighthawk has more or less staked out a little niche for itself in extreme southern Florida. But as soon as I stepped out of the car, I could not one, but two Cattle Tyrants preening in the trees.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Colusa NWR was beginning to fill its impoundments during this drought, and there were quite a few ducks and geese present. Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Above the reedbeds, there were numerous Common Sand Martins (Bank Swallows), with a few Barn Swallows , while the large herd of grazing cattle (one of them particularly interested in licking the dust off my car) was followed by two dozen Western Yellow Wagtails. I am checking the grass for any flash of white and soon my suspicion is confirmed: Cattle Egrets (cover photo)! Along the track leading there are numerous Crested Larks (by cattle corrals), Spotted Flycatchers and Whinchats (in reedbeds), until I reach the sea and climb the dyke to spot many grassy islets.

The cattle moved away from the flooded areas and the area beside the highway is home to many species of birds. Terns roosting and Pacific Black Ducks There has been ample food for the Terns and other bird species for many months now. Yeah, we got great looks at the swamphens and also had Mottled Ducks , Gray Kingbird , Yellow-crowned Night-Heron , baby Common Gallinules , and Black-necked Stilts but the lack of a Least Bittern was indicative of Carlos’s inability to get the truly hard birds.
