There were several ducks around the water body and they included Pacific Black Ducks , Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. The egret family were represented by the Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and a lone Cattle Egret. Ducks, Ibis and Egrets. Ducks, Ibis and Egrets.

This year’s total of waterbirds species nesting on the islands wetlands was 18 with one species of grebe, four species of herons, one ibis, five species of ducks, two species of gallinules, five species of waders and one species of Tern. One pair of Little Egrets along with two pairs of Night Herons nested at Kanli dam.

It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched.

and 180 bird species ( Ferruginous Duck , Black Woodpecker ; Icterine , Eastern Olivaceous and Barred Warblers ) recorded so far. Head back to the town of Opovo and ask for the Kod Bobe Restaurant (Chez Boba), a second generation in the same family and the best restaurant in the region.

The pretty village is surrounded by the high hills of the Pennines, so we soon found ourselves driving through a mixture of cattle-grazed pastures and heather moorland, and our next three birds were all waders that depend on the moors for their nesting habitat.

Research indicates that this decline can be tempered by management of cattle grazing practices, preventing growth of shrubs and trees and the invasion of non-native plants. We need to create bridges (and a very happy experience with a local ranching family led us to believe that this is possible). back to the birds.

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. Sadly, he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) so I had to content myself with just Burrowing Owls , Monk Parakeets , Loggerhead Shrikes , and Cattle Egrets. We saw twenty-one swamphens but not a single Least Bittern.
