Cattle Ducks Hunting

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Arriving before sunrise, we could already see the thick clouds on the horizon. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also. Such is birding, such is life.

Sure, the occasional Cattle Egret , Northern Mockingbird , or Red-shouldered Hawk can’t help but cross the path of those with eyes to see them, but the area is surprisingly bird-barren for a Florida zip code. The Magic Kingdom featured Donald, Daisy, and a few Mallards … we all know how much Disney likes ducks!

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

Not that long ago, Costa Rica had one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, rainforests were razed to make way for hot and chiggery cattle pasture, and bot flies probably became more numerous than some bird populations.

The altruistic vampire, back at the roost after a meal of horse or cattle blood, will regurgitate the blood to feed not only her own pup, but other adults and their pups too, all of this prompted by being groomed by the donee and, in particular, by being licked on the lips.

Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Our primeval quarry flashed that cold, knowing smile and flew off, daring us to track it down for better looks. The mighty Shoebill.

The pretty village is surrounded by the high hills of the Pennines, so we soon found ourselves driving through a mixture of cattle-grazed pastures and heather moorland, and our next three birds were all waders that depend on the moors for their nesting habitat.
