“It is next to impossible to persuade people in India to donate money for injured raptors,” says Nadeem Shehzad, co-founder of Wildlife Rescue , a registered non-profit in the Chawri Bazar area of Old Delhi. When a tree filled with nestling Cattle Egrets collapsed, 60 orphans took up temporary residence in the house.
This year was my third year helping to lead trips at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. One of the remaining birds is known to frequent Joe Overstreet Road, a dirt road that runs a few miles through sod farms and cattle pastures between Canoe Creek Road and Lake Kissimmee in Keenansville, about an hour south of Orlando.
The route Corey and I took in advance of the 2019 African Birding Expo may not be the only optimal way to go, but this approach yielded an absolute bounty of wildlife excitement in just 48 action-packed hours. Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle … wow!! What makes this destination so magnificent?
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city. Finally, when our SUV broke down in Gujarat, India, some three years ago, my first two Egyptians were flying above the road!
I think most of you know how important our National Wildlife Refuge system is to me. After all, I have written several posts on wildlife conservation and the Wildlife Conservation Pass that my co-founder Ingrid Taylar and I have been encouraging for years. I will close with a video from Colusa National Wildlife Refuge.
Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. A Wedge-tailed Eagle soared overhead alongside Black Kites and Whistling kites. We spent several hours at Windjana Gorge and there was a great variety in wildlife as always.
The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.
In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.
A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. Images courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Birding Mission valley Prairie falcon raptors'

Following on from last week’s post about Langi Crossing and all that it has to offer in the way of wildlife with an emphasis on crocodiles I thought I should now expand on the birds that you may encounter during a visit! Pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles.
