After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.

The fields near the Tiaozini mudflats look very much like a lunar landscape, but this does not seem to keep a number of species from breeding there, sometimes directly on dirt roads. The fourth species apparently breeding on these fields is Grey-headed Lapwing. Much better than some fiddly spoon-billed sandpipers.

Its mood is not helped by the ambiguous review on eBird: “Although not actually pale, this brownish songbird is one of the plainer thrushes in its range” The Latin species name of the Dusky Thrush is eunomos (I guess that is Greek, but whatever) – meaning well-ordered. It spent its visit at the Golf Course with the Masked Lapwings Vanellus miles and the previous visit by the species had been in February 2008 and prior to that September 2005. There have been a lot of different birds around this year for various reasons, which mainly involve the climatic changes we experience from year to year.

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day. It was a big owl.

Thankfully it did not last long and then brought some surprising birding opportunities that we normally only experience in our Wet Season. Grey Teal roosted around a dam alongside Black-fronted Dotterels and Red-kneed Dotterels and Australian Pratincoles were well-camouflaged amongst the cattle. Brolga and martin species.

On that visit we paddled from Lake Argyle back to Kununurra over three days and that was a magnificent experience. Masked Lapwings , Straw-necked Ibis , Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Magpie-larks , Cattle Egrets and Australian Pratincoles all gather around and in the drainage channel. Cattle Egret. With an obvious hint of disapproval, the HBW remarks that for this species, the “nest [is] a small or bulky but always untidy pad” I suspect the author of these lines lives with teenage children and uses the description of the magpie-robin to vent some frustration with them. But it is all for science, I hear them say. but they do.
